SIPPAH STRAW FOR A HESITANT MILK DRINKER
I was jumping in joy at one night Nico drank his glass of milk straight without any sign of resistance. I thought I can already say: Thank goodness, finally! Not too fast. I think I spoke too soon. That was just one of those very rare days the Little Boy does that.
He simply is testing my patience, making the drinking of milk from a glass an ordeal. Hay, susme! My acne breakouts are increasing by the day just convincing him to drink from a glass.
And I told myself, this can’t be happening forever, or I’ll give up. I was kinda desperate and even considered getting back to the bottle. What silly idea! But that’s because I’ve tried anything and every trick there is to make the drinking session a little harmonious but I haven’t had any luck yet. Until one fine weekend, my Little Boy was watching his fave shows on Nick, I saw this advertisement where it was shown the kids are enjoying their milk with the use of a special straw—the Sippah straw, the fun way to drink milk!
I stored in mind what it looked like and promised myself I’ll go look for it when we do the groceries. And I was successful in finding the product. It was located in the racks near the growing milk products. To my excitement, I didn’t looked at the nutritional facts, and gave it a go. I bought a couple of boxes, (the chocolate flavored one) and immediately by the minute we’re home, I tried it with Nico. And the result:

The Sipahh straws is not your ordinary kinds of straw. They’re filled with little pellets of flavoring .
How the kids in the advertisement showed their love for drinking milk, I likewise saw it when Nico used the straw. Cool huh? The glass of milk was consumed in a blink of an eye. Hehe, of course that’s an exaggeration. Ummm, make that two minutes, to be more exact. ![]()
Well, I was really happy seeing the trick worked. But being the meticulous Mom that I am, I researched what’s the magic behind this Sippah straws–what makes it kick? The packaging says: Natural colors, no artificial flavors, no preservatives. But does the labels speak truth?

A few googling into the Net, there I saw a very relevant review by BevNET, a beverage-oriented media company operating that reviews on drinks and beverages. Part of the review which I noted and nodded in agreement:
Honestly, I was quite surprised to see artificial sweeteners as part of the ingredients. These products are for kids — What kid is going to be tricked into drinking milk with aftertaste of artificial sweeteners? Do parents really want their kids drinking sucralose and acesulfame potassium? I sure don’t.
And my answer to the question addressed on parents? Of course not! I definitely wouldn’t want any of those artificial sweeteners for my son. And I so agree with another point raised by BevNet.
Provided highly sweetened food is an occasional thing rather than a staple - I don’t see the need to get hysterical. Health and obesity issues aside - I believe we have a problem with the way we condition our taste buds to very sweet foods.
And so, that was the first and last time Nico had the Sippah straw on his milk. Those left unconsumed, I kept as souvenir of my buying misadventures.
Now, what step did I took to make Nico drink milk from a glass? I resorted to having the ordinary straws instead.
Sometimes it works, sometimes not. Still hoping though he’d get used to drinking milk from the glass, without prodding, and without the straws. Soon.

Have you tried those swirly looking straws? They look so neat and I remember the kids enjoyed using them.
You know, my boy took a long time to wean from the bottle. Six years old and he was still drinking from the bottle. I failed to wean him but my girls did at aged 2.
hi Noemi. yes, we have those swirly straws too. sometimes, he’ll get interested using it, then at times, he just want the ordinary straws. am just giving it a go just for now, para lang makainom sya ng milk.
good for L and M to be weaned at an early age.
hmmm, does that indicate mas mahirap i wean ang boys vs. girls? hope not.

good for Andre! sana ganyan din si Nicolas.
i haven’t seen that sippah straw, but i guess i shouldn’t be looking for it after all
i need those swirly straws too!

hi Wench.
he has glasses printed with cartoon characters pa nga. minsan it works, minsan hindi. kaloka!
Louna’s in the same period too. She starts to hate drinking milk. She would rather drink fruit juices.. but as parents know, kids don’t get the same nutrients/vitamines between milk and juices.. So like you, I venture to different tricks. Right now, what works well is using a bowl with a painting of a lady at the bottom. So she drinks little by little till she sees the head, shoulders, hands.. and so on.. it’s fun and most importantly, she finishes her milk, otherwise, she will not see the lady’s shoes.
But as you said, one day it could work, next day, nope. So I try to supplement with offering her yoghurts and cheeses. That way, she gets her load of calcium without us getting into conflict every morning.

hi Analyse! naku, parang ang giving up drinking milk eh milestone din sa mga kids ano. pero as much as possible sana, yan ang ayokong alisin kay Nico. alam mo na, iba pa rin ang may milk sa daily diet ng growing kids.
ang galing naman ng bowl na yan. magic! cross your fingers she’ll not get tired of that or else, panibagong isip na naman ng trick para mapainom ng milk.
My baby who used to be a tabachingching is slowlyl weaning from nursing. She’s down to 2x a day now at night mostly, and as a result she’s losing weight. I’m trying to get her to drink more milk too. She went straight from nursing to sippy cups and now does glasses, and straws from a glass. Still not enough! I’ll have to think of ways to get her to drink more. Wish that straw was a healthy choice like it had advertised no?

hi Tin! Mina’s a growing toddler na! I think its pretty ok for her to give up the night nursing. afterall, we wanted them to sleep through the night na din.
you’re on the right track with the sippy cups, then now to drinking from a glass, with the aid of straws. sana nga may maka imbento nung straws na may vitamins na pellets ano.
My kids have mixed reactions. Gaby doesn’t like it much and would rather have her milk as is. Si Adi naman type na type nya yung chocolate. And she likes it chilled. Nasa ref yung mga Sipah para malamig daw sa lips nya
Cookies last blog post..Litratong Pinoy : Ayaw Ko!
hi Cookie! I tasted the milk using the sippah straw, lasang gamot. I agree, mixed reactions for different kids. my niece din, gusto ang sippah, strawberry flavor naman. like Adi, Nico likes his milk, chilled too.
First time to see that product. No need for me to use those, the kids like to drink their milks, sometimes they would even drink an extra glass before sleeping even if they had drank already during dinner
What about colorful glasses for Nico, yung me cartoon characters? Baka ganahan,
