ON MODELING STINTS-TO-BE FOR NICO AND THOUGHTS OF AN UBER STAGE MOMMY

I confess, I am but a certified 100 percent stage mother to Nico. No doubt about that and I have to believe all doting mothers in this world around are naturally in the same boat as I am. Don’t we just love and adore our kids to pieces that we are often engrossed with documenting every milestone and every development they achieved?

To us, they are the most beautiful creatures that God has ever created on planet earth and often times we can’t help but praise them, and be proud and brag about them from the littlest to the amazing things that they do. I for one, had proven this myself but never did I thought this stage mommying admittance would be put to test when something came up.

Two weeks ago, while we’re dining in a restaurant in Eastwood City, a stranger approached us surprisingly. A young professional looking person that he is, he introduced himself as a talent scout for an advertising agency. He said he was very pleased with the looks and smiles and charms of our Little Boy and asked if we’re interested in letting Nico try to audition for some commercial shoots that he is currently handling.

Of course, never would I deny that the offer of the talent scout got me really excited. I was so thrilled about it actually that I remembered I was wearing a big big smile on my face while listening to what the talent scout was saying. You wouldn’t believe it, but I was sort of like a crazy stage Mommy going nuts with bubble thoughts on my head while the talent scout was doing his sales talk, imagining how exciting and thrilling it will be seeing my Little Boy model for a kid’s clothe line with all the lights and lenses aimed at him.

I can’t exactly describe what or how am I feeling at that time and all I remembered was I felt my Little Boy just won $10,000 bucks worth of prize money along with one of those seats in the most-coveted Look of the Year search. It’s a worldwide search for young and beautiful models where contestants have high possibilities of being spotted by agencies for a modeling career in Paris, New York or Milan. That’s a tempting chance to work with beautiful people from all over the world. And mind you, the judges in Look of Year Search are not some secret group, but simply everybody who surfs onto LookOfTheYear.com and vote.

Apparently though, while the talent scout was doing his sales talk with me and the Little Boy, Hubby was just observing how Nico was behaving as the talent scout asks him questions like: “Hi Nico. You’re so handsome naman. You want to appear in those TV commercials na parang artista?” The Little Boy, being the shy-type that he is, was very conscious as the talent scout asked him the question. As it seemed, Nico wasn’t mindful at all of the praises he’s been hearing from the stranger and it didn’t help him feel comfortable at all. Anyway, after about 15-20 minutes of good talk, the talent scout left his business card for us to contact if in case we’re interested.

Right there when the talent scout left, Nico was asking me what those modeling for commercials was all about. And timing as it was that when we left the restaurant and I was about to answer what modeling was all about, we saw this amusement beside Eastwood’s center stage area:

Don’t know what they are called, but we sampled those two people as an illustration of what models are–that they can represent something to convince people to buy a product. And Nico’s reaction? Well, he was in awe and all the more confused. Haha! Bad bad examples, I know.  And so when we’re on our way home, I just showed him the huge billboards we saw along the way and there, I think he somehow understood what’s those commercial modeling was all about.

Shameful and shallow it might have been of me, but if it were only up to me to decide, I’d grab the opportunity to have Nico’s photos and video clips submitted for audition. But apparently, Hubby opted to be on the “conservative” and “cautious” side. Not that he’s not open to the idea of seeing his son in that so-called “glare of limelight”, but he says the enthusiasm to join, we should first see that in Nico.

And knowing Nico, our smart four-year old whose now very insistent on what he wants (gosh, everybody in the household knows we’re going crazy as to how he can now reason out so many of those smartest excuses just to get something!), I don’t think he’s ready yet to such idea. Though he’s improved a lot in terms socializing and mingling with kids, we just thought that he’s still the shy-type Little Boy that we know.

It’s been two weeks plus since we had that encounter with the talent scout and honestly, I am so itching to get the business card and call in those numbers. Dilemma, if you may want to call it, but every time I attempt to touch that dial, I’ve come to think of how Nico would react if I say we’re going to submit his photos and join the audition. And then I put the business card back in my wallet and, later realized that as parents, we will not push him into something he’s not yet inclined to, or else we might be missing the boat in the end. ;)

Alam mo ba, si Gaby ganyan din ang nangyari. We were approached by a talent scout in National Bookstore and then in SM. Kwentuhan na lang kita pag nagkita tayo.

No doubt the Hezzies will also be approached. aba, walang halong bola ito, pero Adi and Gab are pang artistahin ang mga beauties.

Sige, sana matuloy ako bukas, at para kwentuhan to the max. :)

Mahirap yata ang ganito, Feng, since Nico is still young. Though of course, having that experience will also be a learning stage for him.

You have to decide as a family about matters like this.

yan nga din ang greatest consideration ko. parang he’s too young for that. but then again, very delightful makita sya in those billboards.

      hay, dilemma.

share ko lang - about last year or two years ago, my son was also asked to do a vtr for a milk commercial in makati. a scout saw my son’s picture on my husband’s computer, thus the invitation.
hindi kami nagpunta. una, it was a weekday, may pasok sa school. ikalawa, it will be held in makati, and i’m afraid i’m not familiar with makati streets, ang dami pasikot-sikot dun diba. ikatlo, coding kami and the appointment was at 9am. so 7am pa lang nasa makati na kami, pagdating ng 9am may sumpong na ang anak ko. pwede kami magcommute - pero all that trouble for a vtr na hindi naman ako sigurado kung tanggap agad ang anak ko?

anyway, in your case, why not? wala namang pasok at malapit kayo sa makati. you can always back out anytime if you’ll suddenly realize ayaw mo na.

Cess, I have an online buddy too na ganyan din ang nangyari. nakita sa photos nya sa Friendster yung pics ng anak nya, tapos, that was the start na.

sayang naman yung kay Ipan Jr. but then again, if you think of the circumstances, better you didn’t push through with na rin. aba, hirap yata mag commute. Makati area pa.

yung kay Nico, ewan ko din kung tutuloy pa kami. super conservative ng Tatay. wag na lang daw. yoko naman bitbitin ang bata without his approval. :(

feng, abby’s ninang works for an ad agency and she convinced me and hubby to bring abby in for a vtr. wala pang 1 year old si abby nun. we went through with the whole thing pero we vowed never to do it again. grabe! yung mga nandun sa vtr, mga batikan na. may mga portfolio chuva na. hahaha. tapos mga stagemommies ang nandun talaga na nageexchange ng mga kuwento tungkol sa mga latest projects ng mga anak nila. kaya ayun, sabi ko, magkakaron lang ng commercial ad stint si abby kung i-hire siya sans a vtr or audition. o diba? hee hee. :D

I understand your predicament Weng. yan na nga din ang fear ko about going for a VTR. para bang, I’m not giving my son freedom to choose kasi nga I’m the one to decide for him.

I admire your philosophy about those churvas. am not for anything against parents having their children go through auditions, pero sana, they makes sure it won’t suppress the freedom of the child for play.

aba, with a little girl as pretty and as charming as Abby, dapat lang, sila ang lumapit sa inyo for an ad stint. ;)
