WHAT’S IN OUR FAMILY FOOD MENU?
We went to see Nico’s pediatric pulmonologist for a follow-up check up yesterday, finally (after postponing and canceling our long-overdue appointment). After bouts and bouts of terrible coughs that he had last year, the check up was required by the doc to see the Little Boy’s susceptibility in acquiring asthma. Thank goodness because during the doc’s assessment, he said that Nico’s doing pretty well as far as his weight management is concerned, which should put the threats of asthma at bay.
Nico’s still in the overweight category (heavy at 23 kilos), but the doc’s pretty impressed to see that Nico have not gained weight for the past three months. “Tumangkad lang pero buti naman at hindi nadagdagan ang timbang,” the doc says and even kidded we stop calling Nico our Little Boy because he’s taller by a few centimeters since the last checkup (112 cms as of todate). Heehee, buti na lang at hindi nagmana ng pagkabansot sa Mommy at Daddy.
Anyway, we were really grinning ear to ear hearing the doc’s assessment because at the very least, it was a good measure that the weight management we’ve been doing back second week of December is paying off. It was kinda difficult hurdling through the weight management program at first especially that Nico’s drastically switched from powdered milk to now fresh milk, but the pains (including the thought: aren’t we depriving him?) were all worth it. And so when the doc asked Nico what milk is he drinking, he’d say “dati po Nido pero ngayon, fresh milk na lang kasi po tumataba ako masyado”. And when asked a little more, “anong pinapakain sayo ng Mommy?” he’ll say “fish po, tsaka vegetables, tsaka kanin”. Isn’t that the bestest words a doting Mom could ever hear? How rewarding!
Rewarding at least for me. Heehee. Because for someone like me whose never really gotten used to treat cooking with a great deal (you know, the person that has the fast food chains and the katay ng lata as staples? That’s just how I am before. LOL), preparing healthy meals for my little family was a challenge so tough.
It began back when Nico, who was still a wee little baby then, started eating solids, and moreso, when Hubby was diagnosed with hypertension and high levels of cholesterol years ago, the challenge became tougher than ever. Imagine cooking for two loved ones with varying dietary requirements? Whew! But I’m happy because, after trials and errors and never ending kitchen experiments, I’ve braved through that cooking for two challenge pretty well, I think.
While on weight management with Nico, a little OCness kicked in me that I thought of taking photos of the dishes I prepared. But clicking the cam were only on opportunities that I can, because most of the time, we’ve already devoured on the food and left the dish plates empty before I totally realize and remember that geez, I should have taken pictures of the food first.
Talk about katakawan on my part! Heehee. Anyway, that would be my next project–to program a complete weekly menu loaded with all the photos that will be posted in a corner of the kitchen counter. That way, whipping up something nutritious and healthy in the kitchen will be more inspiring. And before I’m totally lost and start craving for food, let me share some of those photos of dishes I prepared. This is what’s in our family’s food menu. (Excuses for the use of the same plates, ayaw maglabas ng bago, you know, may batang makulit na baka makabasag ng pinggan, heehee).
Breakfast

Lugaw with soft boiled egg (mawawala ba naman yan?)

at Champorado

Spam loaded with lots of ketchup

Sardines with Bihon (Mega Sardines brand)

Hotdogs and scrambled eggs
Lunch

Menudillo (sometimes, with lots of ketchup, again for the Little Boy)

Caldereta (sans the Chillies, again for the sake of the Little Boy)

Sinigang na Baboy (but of course! forever fave ni Nico eh)

Tinolang Manok

Sinigang na Bangus sa Miso
AM/PM Snack

Spaghetti (loaded with hotdogs and ketchup)

Sopas
Dinner

Adobong Sitaw (kailangan talaga may konting sabaw, for the Little Boy, as always)

Chopsuey (medyo dapat saucy din, heehee)

Monggo (mukha bang monggo ang photo?)

Kalabasa with Bihon

Patola con Misua

Bachoy
Well, our family menus are not really that strictly planned as of the moment. But at the very least, I try my best to prepare the healthier ones, except for those random days (usually on lazy weekends that we don’t eat out), that we feast on sinful meals too. Heehee, at paminsan-minsan lang naman, masarap ding kumain ng ma-cholesterol at mga pagkaing pampabata, just like these meals that we devoured on some lazy Saturdays. Sarap!

kakagutom naman nyan. we’re also controlling louna’s food intake, dahil kung hindi, she could eat as much or even more than i do.. she just loves eating, and she’s got no notion yet kung busog na sya.. but the good thing here is that, frenchies generally eat healthy balanced food, sa atin kasi, hilig talaga natin sa rich fatty foods.. yun naman kasi ang masarap e hehe..

hi Mare!
naku pigilan ang temptation kumain. remember, we’re both on a diet. LOLz. (naku, diet daw oh!) bwahahaha.
hi Teacher Julie! halika, kain tayo!
hi Analyse!
well, that’s one thing you should be thankful. buti si Louna at may good appetite for food. si Nico, like among kids I know, madalas picky eater na rin! mas madali naman siguro to control what they eat, rather than prodding and begging kids to eat.
heeya Thet!
ay naku, puro simple dishes lang naman yan. wala din akong masyadong alam lutuin dati kundi egg at hotdog, haha! I wish to be more adventurous in my cookings though, like incorporating chillies and spices and Asian ingrdients like coconut milk (one of my faves). pero saka na lang, baka hindi pa kayanin ng digestive system ni Lilttle Boy.
You take great food shots and siempre talagang mukhang masarap ang luto mo sa apicture pa lang. From your last entry Nico having lost weight and looking taller was the first thing I noticed. Good job mommy
thanks Geri!
that’s why, my next project is complete a weekly menu loaded with all the food photos in it. that way, cooking will be more encouraging.
Nico did really grew a little taller. and cross fingers he’ll do away with the growth gap years which is but forthcoming.
