A LIL BOY’S CRACKED TOOTH AND A DRACULA COSTUME FOR HALLOWEEN

Halloween is approaching in less than a week and I am panicking already thinking of a unique costume for Nico when he joins a Trick or Treat Activity at a Rotary function that we’re about to attend on 31 October. Nico’s Dada jokingly suggested a Dracula costume for the little tod. I wondered why, so I asked him. “What about the Dracula costume?” I said. “Simple lang. Look at his upper front teeth. Don’t they look like Dracula’s?” the Dada said. “Oh yeah, the teeth,” said me matched with a deep sigh.

A deep sigh because if there’s anything that I regret not having really focused on, it’s Nico upper front teeth. Oh yes, the four upper front teeth that continues to deteriorate since one of the upper front tooth cracked on 10 December 2005 (see, I even remember the day). The cracked tooth was the damage created by Nico’s accidental pagkadapa where his tooth was the one that hit a concrete floor. It was just a small crack and if someone will not look closely on the tooth, one wouldn’t notice there was a crack. Take for example this photo:

We consulted a pedia dentist for the cracked tooth as I thought that pasta or laser treatment might be necessary to remedy the disaster. But an irritated and an uncooperative Nico hindered the dentist from examining the tooth so we had no other choice but to reset the visit. The dentist said it was a natural reaction for kids to fear a dentist and recommended that we make frequent visits so that Nico will soon get used to seeing a familiar face. We did as what the dentist had said but to reasons I can’t understand, after all the subconscious conditioning, Nico just didn’t cooperate when the dentist tried filling the cracked tooth on our fifth visit. We were upset and so was the dentist who had no choice but to recommend nothing but for us to simply do regular brushing of Nico’s teeth. And since the crack made the tooth susceptible to decay, early weaning from the bottle and avoidance of some sweets or regular gargling with water might help, the dentist added.

But Nico was weaned only lately (bad Mommy me, it long overdue, he was a little over three years when he said goodbye from the bottle, imagine!) which I believe, despite following other advices from what the dentist had recommended, was the main reason why the crack became larger, making it more obvious even when seen from afar. And unfortunate as it was (but expected), three more upper front tooth near the cracked tooth developed decay later, which not only lessened the killer smile of my handsome little boy, but also brought Nico periodic toothaches of which some were much unbearable without antibiotics.

We even mulled over having the culprit tooth pulled out so Nico won’t suffer anymore from an impacted tooth. But the rigorous procedure discussed by the dentist (Nico will be sedated during the procedure which will require clearance first from his pedia cardio), we opted not to pursue it anymore. Troubled that we are now of Nico’s deteriorating teeth (even in my sleep, I’ve had weird dreams), we can’t do anything but to wait until some three or four years more when his permanent teeth sprouts. Sigh.

And oh, about the Halloween costume, I’m still choosing between the one recommended by Nico’s Dada (the Dracula costume) or the Little Pirate costume. I can imagine how cute my little boy would be in the Little Pirate one, but economically speaking, the Dracula costume is also nice considering we don’t have to buy fake fangs.

Look. Don’t the photos looks like Nico wore fangs?

Oh, how I miss my handsome little boy’s killer smile like this:

Kung tulad ni Nico na drakula ang kakagat sa akin ng paulit-ulit, payag ako hahaha! Juk! Makipagribal ba sa anak? :p

You know, why not try Harry Potter instead?
We have similar guilts, Kelvin developed enamel flourosis & his upper front teeth (as in 4 of them) looked pretty bad. Ok naman sya sa dentist but even frequent visits didn’t save them. I’m praying that his permanent come out before he’s 8.

Hi Feng! I can relate to your story here. Yung sister ko nadapa din when she was around 4 years old.

Auee, oh yes, the Harry Potter costume is a very nice idea! ang isang problema lang dun would be if Nico would bear wearing a Harry Potter eye glass. :) anyway, will think about the final attire today.

so you mean even frequent visits to the dentist with the treatment and all, were not enough pa rin pala to save Kelvin’s teeth? siguro sa mga kinakain din ng mga kids yan ano? thank goodness, baby teeth pa lang yon. well, let’s just pray that we’ll be able to take care of the permanent teeth when they come out, which will be years to go pa!

Nice, ang agad din tinubuan ng permanent teeth ang sister mo ah. yup, a dentist should be consulted soon so that proper treatment can be done esp. for new permanent teeth.

with B.Boy’s age now, medyo ordeal talaga ang pagbu brush ng teeth, pero tyaga lang, kahit umiiyak, talagang kailangan ma brush ng husto ang teeth, esp. after eating sweets. :)

yes Analyse, better have it seen by Frenchguy. it doesn’t looked alarming at first, pero seeing how Nico’s upper front teeth deteriorated , it should serve as wake up call already.

happy halloween to you and Louna too! :)

Try using “tooth mousse”. We also have a bit of a problem with Adi’s teeth and she refuses to have the dentist fiddle with her mouth. So their dentist suggested that we apply tooth mousse to prevent decay or at least slow it down. The brand is Recaldent and you can get it from any dentist.

Julian’s front tooth deteriorated too, when he wanted to drink Lactum chocolate drink. Didn’t see it coming, and I could just bang my head on the wall for giving in to him having that milk for two months! Visit to the dentist for oral prophylaxis didn’t prevent the decay. Even my cousin’s daughter has black teeth due to drinking that milk. Argh! Now, no more chocolate milk for them and we switched brands too.

thanks, Cookie. :) Gee, I didn’t know there’s that tooth mousse. sige, I’ll ask for that when go we visit Nico’s dentist this Nov.

Julie, so Lactum pala ang culprit? I hope the brand you switched to is okay na. si Nico naman, forever Nido Fortified yun, no choco flavor though, pero just the same it added to his teeth’s decay. :(

Yohan’s front teeth also deteriorated early. It was probably caused by milk (when he was a baby, he sometimes fell asleep with the bottle). I didn’t know ’til later that milk should always be followed by water.

I’m looking for a pedia dentist in our area. Probably on a weekend.

Nico still looks cute and adorable even with one of his front teeth chipped. Charming pa din.

Rach, thanks. :) and so is Yohan, handsome as ever.

Yes, milk is most often the number one culprit for the decay. if you can’t find a pedia dentist, pwede pa rin naman sa Dentist ng adults. hope your visit pushes through soon.
