A MOM’S CONSOLATION IN THE MIDST OF A HARD DAY’S WORK

Children are our most valuable natural resource.” — Herbert Hoover

True enough, the quote above was exactly how I felt a week ago. In the middle of a very hectic and toxic day at the AEM Press Center last week, I got an unexpected text message from Hubby asking me to call home as he’s got good news. “Pls call home, matutuwa ka. Gud news,” the text message stated. I didn’t pay attention to the text message at first as I thought Hubby was just making pa-cute and pa-miss to me since I haven’t been home for two days. But Jun persisted calling my attention by texting one or two more SMS prodding me to call home ASAP. So after some more minutes of seeing most of the media persons quite contented in their working stations doing their stories, I called home. “So what’s the good news? We’re so busy here and exhausted na ako and I can’t keep talking to you on the phone for long,” I said. “Hay naku matutuwa ka at mawawala ang pagod mo. Nandito na ang test results ni Nico for the first quarter and you know what?” Jun said but hanging his statement. “What?” said me. “He’s got very high grades, nakakatuwa!” Jun said, then dictating to me Nico’s exam results for all the four subjects.

How rewarding it is to be a parent, or to be a Mom, to be more precise. Higher scores for all the subjects were the least we expected as we didn’t bother to have Nico review on the pointers provided by his Teacher two days before the exam. The To-Review-List were just so rigid and long that we thought it’s somewhat inappropriate to pressure a three-year old to review learning concepts at such short notice. Another reason too was that Nico was suffering from a tooth infection during the weekend before the exams and it wasn’t really possible to force him to review his lessons as an abscess on his right face, a mild fever and a lingering pain in his gums were obstacles. Short to say, we spent the weekend before the exams not for reviewing, but to dealing with the tooth infection. To our panic that Nico’s face would blow up in no time (as his gums gets bulgy hour after hour), we rushed him to the ever-reliable and ever-comforting hospital for our family at all times- - the M-Tech Medical Hospital in Makati.

So the next day, supposedly Nico’s first exam day, we’ve decided not to bring him in school until he recovered from the tooth infection. I just sent the Medical Certificate issued by the Hospital (see photo below) to the school so Nico would be excused and still be allowed to take special exams. Tough decision on our part, but well, we had no other choice. Coincidentally though, classes were suspended for three consecutive days due to heavy rains after Monday so Nico just missed the exam in Math while he was able to take the remaining three on the rescheduled dates the following week. Hehe, lucky Nico.

So there, the exam results just made me one proud Mom for the nth time. Just as when I’m having the most tiring and exhausting days at work, my son never fails to brighten up my gloomy day. A hug, or a kiss, or just simply the sound of his voice suffices enough. But the good grades he’s getting in school, well, it’s a consolation.

Congratulations to Nico’s wonderful achievement in school. Excellent grades!

A child’s hug or kiss or a combination of both can give us much needed boost on a tiring day.
